Senior Research Associate & Manager

The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is the hub of Harvard Kennedy Schools research, teaching, and training in international security and diplomacy, environmental and resource issues, and science and technology policy.
In 2021, the Belfer Center was named a Center of Excellence by the University of Pennsylvania's Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, in recognition of the Center's six consecutive years as the world's #1 university-affiliated think tank.
The Center has a dual mission:
(1) to provide leadership in advancing policy-relevant knowledge about the most important challenges of international security and other critical issues where science, technology, environmental policy, and international affairs intersect; and (2) to prepare future generations of leaders for these arenas.
The Center has an immediate opening for a Senior Research Associate and Manager to support Belfer Center Director Meghan O'Sullivan.
The Senior Research Associate and Manager to will support Dr.
O'Sullivan both in her capacity as the Director of the Belfer Center and as Director of several research projects, including but not necessarily limited to projects focused on Transatlantic Relations in an Era of Great Power Competition and Geopolitics and the Energy Transition.
The Senior Research Associate and Manager to will help conceptualize, organize, and build out new projects, including by helping to identify potential funding sources.
The Senior Research Associate and Manager will also convene research activities and events, as well as manage student research assistants, related to these projects and the work of the Director.
This person will also pursue his/her/their own research under the supervision of the Director where agreed upon with the Director.
This position will also provide direct substantive support to the Director, preparing memos and briefs for various engagements in which Dr.
O'Sullivan is representing the Belfer Center (such as the Davos World Economic Forum, the Munich Security Conference, Aspen Security Forum/Group, etc).
The successful candidate must have research experience, excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills and a proven track record of proactive problem-solving and multitasking skills.
Candidates must be able to manage a wide range of high priority duties including, agenda setting, selecting and inviting high profile speakers, and coordinating with a variety of stakeholdersincluding students, other Harvard faculty, fellows, and staff, as well as senior university administrators, donors and prominent individuals and organizationsPosition Description Responsibilities for this position will include (and are not limited to):
Conceptualize, organize, and convene core research activities and events for projects under the direction of the Belfer Center Director, including - but not limited toprojects on Transatlantic Relations in an Era of Great Power Competition and Geopolitics and the Energy Transition Conduct his/her/their own research and spearhead the Northern Ireland project being developed by Belfer Center Director Provide direct support to visiting fellows and faculty associated with the Belfer Center Director's project areas Manage student research assistants supporting the Belfer Center Director Conduct research and prepare memos and briefs for meetings and high-level events or engagements in which Dr.
O'Sullivan will be representing the Belfer Center Contribute to internal and external publications such as research reports, op-eds, academic articles, and book chapters Advise the Director on funding opportunities for specific research projects; prepare funding/grant proposals ensuring that all sponsor guidelines are met and compliance requirements are followed; monitor grants and draft reports to comply with reporting requirements for sponsored research grants and awards.
Collaborate closely with other members of the Belfer Center leadership team Other related job duties, as required Basic Qualifications Master's degree required.
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience leading a project or program involving research agenda setting; fundraising; and conceptualizing, organizing, and convening conferences, workshops, and dialogues.
Demonstrated experience with/knowledge of national security issues Additional Qualifications and SkillsThe following are preferred, not required:
Significant knowledge of, and interest in, current international security issues; exceptional writing skills; basic quantitative proficiency; and a demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision under tight deadlines.
oAbility to prioritize to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced, high-energy, and constantly changing environment.
Proven ability to multitask while maintaining excellent attention to detail.
A team leader and player who is highly motivated, proactive, and possesses strong organization skills.
Prior experience working with high profile individuals and organizations is a plus.
Additional InformationThis position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending two years from date of hire, with strong possibility of renewal/extension.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a written assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interviews with the Belfer Center Executive Director and Director.

Salary Range:
$74,200 - $126,200Note:
Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidates relevant experience, and internal equity.

Paid Time Off:
3-4 weeks of accrued vacation time per year (3 weeks for support staff and 4 weeks for administrative/professional staff), 12 accrued sick days per year, 12.
